Notes
The overall pattern (that is, covering the entire piece) is distinctive for this inlaid binding in terms of the design and decoration of the central area. The densely packed central area features a medallion with channel grooves and pendants filled with arabesques, hatayi scrolls, and scrolls of Chinese clouds, rosettes, and foliage. Similar models adorn the corner pieces. The main panel is surrounded by four L-shaped lobed areas similarly decorated with floral scrolls. This comprehensive model is covered with gold plating, creating a shiny surface. The popular Persian design of “lashak trounaj” (medallion and corner pieces) was developed in Persia for book covers and to give a bright, gilded form to book decoration in the 15th century and was incorporated into carpet designs in the 10th century AH/16 AD. A similar design can be found in two Persian carpets decorated with a similar medallion and corner-cut design, which have a symmetrical pattern occupying the center of the field.
