Notes
Timur occupies the center position in this group portrait. From front and left are the emperors Shah Jahan, Akbar and Babur with Abu Sa'id, ruler of Samarkand and Timur's son Miranshah. To the right are the emperors Aurangabad, Janjir and Humayun and two of Timur's other sons, Omar Sheikh and Muhammad Sultan. The characters are identified with phrases written in gold. The location of the painting is a balcony overlooking the garden with cypress trees. People kneel on a richly flowered carpet with valuable objects including two unusual incense burners and an enameled table with two Chinese porcelain flowers. The details in the drawing are so precise that the smoke emanating from the two incense burners can be seen. Although the composition should be dated from the beginning of Aurangabad’s rule, the style of the painting says that its date is the eighteenth century and that it was painted by Bhawani Das. His signature appears on the nearly identical hexagon table in a painting from the Penny Collection.
