Notes This saddle includes a wooden base covered with leather covers and semi-circular saddlebags. Notice the elaborate lacquer painting: there are vine leaves curled together, blue flowers and red carnations on a black background, and red-gold Chinese cloud shapes. In the 16th century, this eastern saddle was in Ambras Castle near Innsbruck, which was probably Turkish spoils bought from Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol (1529-95 AD) in 1556.
