Notes
This carefully woven and highly colorful carpet is among the most beautiful of all Ottoman textiles. It is one of the first carpets to include a triple-arched portal. Its design probably originates from an Ottoman Empire workshop. The lamp hanging in the central arch is reminiscent of Qur’anic verses likening God to the light of a lamp placed in a niche. The depiction of this carpet, its high quality and relatively small size means that it was used as a prayer rug by a member of the elite of the Ottoman court.
