Notes
The bearded Emperor Shah Jahan stands with a halo of light around his head, facing completely left, holding a flower in his raised left hand and his right hand holding the sheathed hilt of his sword, which is pointing toward the ground. He wears a gama (a type of robe with a loincloth) and a kamarband (made of sashes with dangling ends) decorates his waist. The dupatta (scarf) falls over his left shoulder and the end of the sash reaches waist level. There is a dagger (katar) stuck in the sash cloth that wraps around his waist. On his feet, he wears slippers without heels, and pajamas are worn under the yamaha. The Emperor also wears a jeweled pajari (turban) with a sarbis (with feathers) surrounded by a dark halo. The sarbis appears to be adorned with jewels as he wears the following jewellery: mala (necklace), bhoja, which is a bracelet that extends up the arm, and kangana (bracelet). There is a thin wheat-gold frame with dark wheat floral designs surrounding the painting. The background of the painting is decorated with images of flowers, with the elaborate serrated heads shaded in wheat and gold.
