Notes
In this painting, Hulagu, the second Ilkhanid ruler of Iran (reigned 1256-1265), appears as he sits with one leg crossed over the other on a golden throne, the appearance of his throne surrounding his head like a glowing halo. The man is sitting in front of the throne on a carpet, with two books in front of him and an astrolabe, which is a scientific device for calculating various scientific issues, such as determining time. This person is believed to be the Persian religious scholar and astronomer Nasr al-Din al-Tusi (died 1274). The painting is probably the surviving half of a double-page frontispiece of a now-lost manuscript made in the Mughal Imperial Art Workshop and is perhaps a historical or scholarly text. The painting is the work of artist Manohar.
