Notes
The piece is a half-glass vase with a slightly flared edge. The outside of the vessel is decorated with a layer of blue glass installed on a lower layer of colorless glass. The decorations in the upper layer were cut to form two animals facing each other, surmounted by a strip of calligraphy that reads, “Blessing be upon him.” The bodies of the two animals are decorated with small circles cut into the lower layer of the vessel. The method of making and decorating this piece with two layers of glass is of special value, as this piece is a unique example of a style that was not common in the arts of Middle Eastern countries during the Middle Ages. The method of decoration with pieces reached the peak of its development in the Fatimid era, when glassmakers resorted to this method in decorating a type of thick glass in imitation of the decorations of contemporary expensive rock crystal masterpieces.
