Notes
The piece is a plaster window containing cut-out decorations filled with colored glass. The net decorations are located in two rectangular parts: lower and upper. The decoration of the lower part, which is the highest, consists of a pointed arch containing floral decorations, including cypress trees, and decorations representing some Ottoman architectural elements, such as domes and minarets. The decoration of the upper part consists of an inscription in naskh script that reads, “O Muhammad.” This text was written on a background of geometric decorations and colorful, modified flowers characterized by simplicity. Stucco windows appeared in the buildings of the early Islamic eras, and were used in the Amr ibn al-Aas Mosque and in the Al-Azhar Mosque in the Fatimid era, and their use spread in the Mamluk and Ottoman eras. The Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo maintains many plaster windows with various decorations that give a beautiful view when sunlight falls on them or is exposed to artificial lighting, and one of the most beautiful is the window bearing registration number 9886.
