Notes
This prayer rug is woven with three archways, hanging lamps, vases containing bunches of flowers and large flower rolls. The pastel pink colors and floral twist-woven headband are typical of Chian silk. The famous type dates back to 1742 and was kept in a monastery at Mon in Chios. The export of Cheyenne silk is recorded from the fifteenth century, when the island was under Genoese rule, and continued until the island passed into the hands of the Ottomans in 1566.
