Notes
The outer cover of this binding is made of brown leather with gold-plated designs. The main front of the binding is decorated with a zigzag almond-shaped medallion with two pendants hanging from it, decorated with arabesques, hatayi patterns, and cloud scrolls. There are four corner pieces that frame the piece with similar decorations. Beautiful gold-plated borders with S-shaped designs form the edges of the binding. The fold at the front edge is decorated with four oval shapes in gold lines with small floral decoration. Part of the decoration on the leather is repeated on the fold with a smaller medallion located on top. The interior of the binding is decorated with simple designs that nevertheless maintain the feeling of the center and corner pieces. The elongated medallion, which has a different shape, decorates the center of the inner cover with a group of dangling ornaments. The medallion with a curved rim is filled with a sprinkling of gold dust, as well as the dangling ornaments. The edges of the binding are formed by a similar drawing as found on the outer cover. The same applies to the decorative piece on the inner part of the fold, which has a zigzag almond-shaped medallion at the meeting point filled with gold spray. Contacts between different dynasties were known to have an impact on artistic developments. Turkish binding follows Persian decorative themes in terms of the presence of a medallion in the middle, cut-outs in the corners, and decorated borders until the seventeenth century. However, the artists created their own designs and compositions that can be identified as Turkish.
