Notes Published in 1889 by the Dutch orientalist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, Pictures of Mecca consists of 20 color prints spread over 18 pages and is one of the first photographic records of the Hajj, preceded only by photographs taken in 1881 by Muhammad Siddiqbay. Pictures of Mecca came a year after Picture Atlas of Mecca. This was a collection of clichés. The engraving contains images exclusively of Mecca and portraits of pilgrims taken by Snook himself on his journey that ended in Jeddah and Mecca between August 1884 and August 1885. In addition to this, he published the book (Mecca), a work that focuses on the history of Mecca and the origins of Islam. After publishing these two volumes and unable to photograph the Hajj itself, Snook used photographs taken by a Meccan doctor named Abd al-Ghaffar of the Hajj in August 1888 to publish under the title “Photographs from Mecca.” Snook met Abd al-Ghaffar during his stay in Mecca in 1885. Although Abd al-Ghaffar was familiar with photography, he believes that Snook helped him hone his skills, and he became Snook’s assistant during the six months he was in Mecca. The pictures include scenes of Mecca, Mina and Arafat and depict the different stages of the Hajj. Although traces of Abdel Ghaffar's signature are still visible on the photos, there is clear evidence of an attempt by Snook to erase them. A summary of the text written by Snook opens the volume and a list of paintings precedes the images.
