Notes
The Ottomans were particularly interested in recording historical events and during the reign of Murad III (reigned 1574-95), the court historian Luqman collected this diverse information about the reign of Murad, the grandfather of Sultan Suleiman the Great (reigned 1520-66). The text is largely concerned with Suleiman's defeat of Hungary in the summer of 1566, and the illustrations included here depict the arrival of the Sultan's forces before the city of Szgatvar, the destruction and fall of the city, and the Sultan's death and funeral. (He died during the siege of the city.) The simple and direct style of these paintings is typical of Ottoman historical illustrations.
