Notes
The piece is a headdress decoration with a portrait of Fath Ali Shah (1797-1834) in painted enamel. It takes the shape of a half moon set with a rising/shining sun, which was the ruling emblem of the Persian state that was founded by the Shah in 1807. The imperial crown, studded with jewels, refers to his later oil paintings from the early years of his reign, in which he depicted portraits of him in the traditional royal turban with a head ornament above it.
