Notes
One of the most beautiful forms of Ottoman planning, the tughra was placed on all official documents as the emblem of the ruling sultan. It was also stamped on coins and even displayed on separate planning plates. Each Sultan had his own tughra, consisting of his name, his father’s name, and the phrase “Always Muzaffar.” The current painting shows the tughra of Sultan Selim III (1789-1807), son of Sultan Mustafa III (1757-1774), painted in gold. To the right are floral drawings and a lotus flower drawn in an oval frame surrounded by saz leaves. In the upper left corner there is an almost rectangular frame with a saz paper border on one end. The schematic frame in the lower left corner contains the signature of the calligrapher Muhammad Siddiq (died 1836) and the date.
