Notes
Large circular tiles surrounded by a border of smaller tiles were used as table tops. They were often decorated with banquet scenes, which is a recurring theme in Persian art. Here the composition shows a section of Ferdowsi’s epic Shahnameh (Book of Kings), which is a punishment for Al-Dahhak: who was pursued and expelled far away by the Iranian King Jamshid. Al-Dahhak was sentenced to be a tyrant and imprisoned for a thousand years, but he was removed by Fereydun after a popular revolution led by the blacksmith Kawa. His life was saved, but he will be imprisoned in a cave in Mount Damavand, where he will remain until the end of the world. The scene shows Al-Dahhak's procession being led to his place of imprisonment. The tyrant rides a camel and appears in the upper left corner, and there are two snakes devouring a human brain that grow on his shoulders. To the left is Kawa in a green dress carrying a banner made of the skin of his loincloth with Arabic numbers written on it. To Kawa’s left is the young king Feridun riding a bull and carrying a bull-headed mace, the weapon with which he defeated Al-Dahhak. The magnificent procession is meticulously depicted in a complex scene: pyramidal proportions and diagonal formation are used here to give emphasis to the main characters and are accompanied by the rich, crowded retinue riding on elephants.
