Notes
The piece is what is commonly known as a Holbein carpet, and it has a special, dense kufic-like pattern around the border. The red area has a pattern of nine rows of small medallions alternating in white and blue, and woven bands of pink, red, and violet define the white medallions that surround numerous rosettes in octagons in the previous colors. The blue medallions are formed using arabesques in blue and green with intersecting shapes in the previous colors within rhombuses. The carpet is outlined with braided angular bands derived from Kufic script in white, red, blue and green on a violet or red background. The inner and outer bands contain a red, blue, green and purple stripe design on a yellow and partly red background.
