Notes A ceramic jug with a bulbous body, a narrow neck that gradually widens towards an almost vertical rim, a long mouth that rises above the level of the rim, and the jug's handle is shaped like an open-mouthed dragon. The body is colored in shades of blue and dark blue. Its spiral decoration includes split palm fronds and arabesques. Its lower part is in the form of decorative rosettes. On the top of the shoulder, there is a row of wavy-shaped leaflets. This is in addition to other decorative patterns, scale-shaped on the buttonhole, and a chain of interlocking links on the mouth. The importance of this piece does not stem from its decoration, which is considered an imperfect imitation of Iznik pottery, but rather from the inscription on its base. The Christian craftsman Abraham al-Kuthi wrote his name in the Armenian polurgir script, and also wrote the date 959/1510. The presence of a date on Iznik pottery is unusual, which indicates its great importance in dating many blue and white vessels of the same style. It is possible that this vessel was used for religious purposes.
