Notes
The middle of the sixteenth century witnessed the flourishing of what is known as the Saaz style, which is characterized by the depiction of serrated/toothed plant leaves in a special style, often paired with wonderful creatures that include dragons and animals with a human head. This depiction appears in Ottoman art in a number of media, including fabrics. This wonderful drawing of a dragon is attributed to the teacher of this style, Shah Quli, an artist who immigrated from Iran to Istanbul and became the head of the royal studio under the rule of Sultan Suleiman the Great.
