Notes
This cast bronze incense burner from Khorasan from the 11th-12th century AD in the form of a dove or a falcon shows the influence of the pre-Islamic tradition of representing animals in metalwork in Iran. The bird's body is expertly executed and engraved with decorations that emphasize the modified artistic composition. On the wings there is a medallion with seven rings. The wing and tail feathers are depicted as a scale model, and at the base of the bird's neck and head there are small holes punched to allow incense smoke to escape. On the bird's chest is a square hole for a sliding incense tray, which is missing. The inscription in Kufic script wishes “Glory and Blessing” to the owner of the piece.
