Notes
The body is decorated with a frieze in the center which has a person sitting on his throne. To his left and right there is a presence, each of them carrying something in his hand that may be a badge of his job. The frieze is interrupted by three decorative rings, two of which contain musicians. The handle, which is now missing, had joined the third ring. The frieze containing a pair of hunters on the cover is interrupted by three rings, one of which contains a person of the rank of a prince with his legs crossed, and two of which contain musicians. The legs bear double-headed eagles. The incense burner belongs to a group of about 50 pieces known to be made of cast brass with similar shapes and dimensions, the first of which is from the Kerr collection and bears the name of the Ayyubid Sultan Al-Adil II (r. 1238-1240). The shape is very similar to an incense burner in the British Museum (lot number 1878, 1230.678), which dates back to the year 641 AH. (1243-4) AD and attributed to Mosul.
