Notes
In the area of Raqqa, a group of palaces were found that were given the letters A, B, and C. A group of important pieces were found in them, including this very thin pottery vessel made with molds and decorated with a band of Kufic writing, which reads: “From the work of Ibrahim the Christian, from what (was made) in Al-Hira [for] Mir Sulaiman [with] the Commander of the Faithful.” It is clear from this text that this piece was made in Al-Hira by Ibrahim Al-Nasrani and transported to Raqqa, and it belonged to Prince Suleiman, son of the Abbasid Caliph Abu Jaafar Al-Mansur. The nickname of the craftsman who made the piece, “The Christian,” indicates that he was a pottery maker from the Christians of Al-Hira. The base of the vessel was surrounded by a band of geometric decorations, and the base was provided with modified floral and geometric decorations.
