Notes A mosque lamp has the size and shape of a traditional Mamluk lamp, with an outward-facing neck, a wide body, a high base, and is equipped with glass rings for attaching hanging ropes. The lamp is decorated with enamel inlay, especially blue and red, with some highlights in the use of green, white and gold. Most of the decorations are inscriptions, and a prominent inscription mentions, “What was done by the Grand Master Mawlawi, the Grand Emiri, Sayf al-Din Aqbugha Abd al-Wahid al-Maliki al-Nasiri.” The spaces around the inscriptions were filled with floral patterns and arabesques. The blazon of Seif al-Din Aqbugha, which is diamond-shaped, appears on a rectangular ground, with circular ornaments on the neck. Aqbagha built an important madrasa in the Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo (the Aqbaghawiyah Madrasa) in 740/1340 AD. This lamp was most likely suspended from the ceiling of this building, most likely by the ropes that are still hanging from it today.
