Notes Qatibay was a Mamluk sultan who ruled Egypt and Syria from 1486 AD until his death in 1496 AD. His rule witnessed a cultural flourishing in Egypt, which coincided with growing conflicts with the Ottoman Empire. The portrait is probably based on a now-lost prototype that was in the collection of Paolo Giovio, which is also considered a model for the painting, which is now in the Uffizi Galleries and was woodcut by Tobias Stemmer. The painting is part of a collection of more than 900 portraits that Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol (1529-95 AD) began collecting in 1676 AD. The small paintings come from a range of sources and reflect both historical and contemporary figures.
