Notes
This Ottoman sword was made by Ahmet Khorasani, one of the master swordsmiths of the late 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. He worked under the patronage of the Ottoman Empire in the swordsmiths' guild with famous masters such as Asimoglu, Ismail Ferghani, Osman Ibn Haji Muhammad and Qara Sabir al-Ersrumi. The swords all share similar elements and standard decorations of typical Ottoman swords produced in the 18th and 19th centuries. This model shows a curved blade with a metal plate that is hammered, notched and plated with gold in a backward manner, and there is an inscription in Kufic script along the length of the blade. The scabbard takes the form of a pistol handle made of ivory and a wooden scabbard fastened with gold-plated plates. The blade is engraved with Qur’anic verses and signed with the maker’s name on a square plate.
