Notes The view of Mecca is remarkable for its comprehensiveness and accuracy, and in the form depicted by contemporary topographers it brilliantly combines a city plan with an aerial view taken at an angle of approximately 60 degrees. Muhammad Abdullah, whose grandfather Nizar Ali Khan was a court painter for the Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah II, was asked by the Sharif of Mecca to depict the holy relics under his rule in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. This is the oldest known accurate depiction of the Grand Mosque and its immediate surroundings. The painting is also unique among such depictions in that it includes a small engraving of a man guarding his tractor.
