Notes
The pattern consists of zigzag bands that alternately surround the Shahada (There is no god but God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God) and the invocation “O God, may He be glorified in His glory,” the latter written in reverse script. It is possible that the layout was designed by the master calligrapher, Abdullah Zuhdi, who was known as the scribe of the Two Holy Mosques. Egypt used to supply the kiswah for the Kaaba every year, almost without interruption, but since the beginning of the 1970s, the kiswah has been woven in a special workshop in Mecca.
