Notes
This column capital came from the palace of the magnificent city of Madinat al-Zahra, which was founded by the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Rahman III in 936 near Cordoba. It is composed of administrative buildings, reception halls, residential quarters, squares, pavilions, mosques, and markets. Its architecture is characterized by the shape of successive rows of horseshoe-shaped arches on thin columns with carved and perforated capitals like the one shown here. It is an abstract form of the classic tanned shapes. The hump on one end of this capital bears the inscription “Made by Khabara?”
