Notes
This Quran cabinet from Istanbul will decorate rooms in private homes, mosques, madrasas (Islamic learning centers) and shrines. The box is made in the Ottoman style, standing on four legs, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, geometric patterns, and calligraphy. This rare type of Qur’an cabinet (called a box or chair) has an unusually attractive several compartments for religious items and texts, and the lid is dome-shaped. The Diwani calligraphy reads Al-Fatiha (the opening surah of the Qur’an) and Al-Zalzalah (chapter ninety-nine).In the 19th century, the mother-of-pearl style called Damascus became increasingly popular in Ottoman Türkiye. Artisans arranged precious materials including mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, metal, and ivory into interlocking stars, octagons, and hexagons.
