Notes
The painting shows an aspect of daily life in an Egyptian street, perhaps Cairo. It shows a tired water seller leaning against a brick wall in front of the entrance to a building. The boy carries a large water jar on his back, similar to jar No. SM1996-219, and holds small drinking cups in his hand. Ferraris was a well-known Orientalist painter and a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme, who encouraged him in 1885 to embark on a trip to Egypt with another famous Orientalist painter, Ludwig Deutsch.
