Notes
This Mamluk brass basin is an example of metalwork produced at the end of the 15th century and signed by Khalil Sarakhsi. The main body of the bowl is decorated with four inscriptions in a thuluth line, surrounded by a background of floral decoration and an overlapping knot-like pattern. The inscriptions alternate with medallions bearing mottoes and a border with two lines of a flowering vine pattern. The medallion containing fish is depicted inside the bowl. The inscription says: “This is what was made by order of the virtuous, the noble, the one of high status, the defender of menstruation, the trustworthy, the great, the noble, the learned father, the shepherd, the leader of the jihad, the protector, and the master, the great prince of royal origin.. (the inscription is incomplete).
