Notes
This style of fabric was made for the Fatimid Caliph al-Aziz (r. 975-96) and bears witness to the luxurious nature of Fatimid society. Exceptionally, in addition to presenting the titles of the caliph, it gives the name of his first vizier, Ibn Klis (served during 366-380 AH / 977-90 AD), and Klis, who was of Jewish origin, famous for his financial reforms that helped achieve tremendous prosperity for Egypt and also for the vizier. The inscription reads: “Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, and may God’s blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad. May God appoint the Vizier (God’s help to the Vizier) Abu Mansour, the Imam of the Mighty God, the Leader of the Faithful. May God protect him and bless his pure ancestors. This is what the respected Vizier Abu Al-Faraj Yaqoub Ibn Yusuf (Ibn Kulais), Minister of the Commander of the Faithful, ordered in the year three hundred and seventy-one.
