Notes
Two pieces of roughly equal size in a square shape of patterned brocade silk sewn together on a holder. “The flower and the bird,” a favorite theme of love in Persian culture, is further developed here by adding images of a butterfly, a deer, and a hare. The asymmetry in the proportions of animals indicates a semantic hierarchy in which the bird and the flower are the most important. Brocade fabrics made of Persian silver and gold thread and other precious fabrics were essential items used in the production of Iranian art pieces. They were an export during the Safavid era and were the highest level of fashion among both Iranian and European aristocrats and also the Christian religious class.
