Notes
This cloth is a fine example of Indian silk weaving which probably has the widest loom of any known type of Samite. Fabric like this, with a width of more than 3 metres, must have increased the effort and cost of cutting the fabric to the maximum. Aside from the great technical difficulty in weaving a somit of this size, the high quality of the threads, dyes and craftsmanship show that it can only be woven in a controlled production environment in a royal workshop. The fabric of this size must have been used as a fabric for a sofa or a ceiling covering for a reception hall or a chapel in one of the Buddhist temples in Tibet. But this particular example with its abstract decorative rings could have been used as the roof of a royal tent at any Indian court.
