Notes
Like Muhammad Baqir (active 1204-1160 AH / 1790-1750 AD), Muhammad Sadiq is one of the most famous Persian artists of the 18th century. He was also a student of Muhammad Ali Ashraf (active circa 1134-1190 AH / circa 1722-1777 AD). The box of pens is signed with the typical form “O Sadiq al-Waad,” which indicates the name of The painter, and to the sixth Shiite imam, Jaafar Al-Sadiq. The lid and side wall of the pen case are painted with four pictorial scenes showing three young women led by what appears to be a princess. The scenes probably tell one story. However, it is not clear whether it depicts a literary work or whether it carries a philosophical meaning. At least it seems that the young women are on a spiritual journey, leading from worldly pleasures to spiritual fulfillment. Similar to Muhammad Baqir, Muhammad Sadiq here quotes from the works of Muhammad Zaman (active AH circa 1072-1105 / AD circa 1662-1694) and Ali Quli Jabbadar/Jabbadar (active 1059-1086 AH / 1649-1675 AD) as well as the Zaman brothers, Haji Muhammad (active 1084-1124 AH / 1673-1712 AD).
