Notes This astrolabe is extraordinarily well documented in that it was a piece produced during the Middle Ages. Its inscription is attributed to a Rasulid-era prince, Omar Ibn Yusuf, who had ascended to the throne a few years earlier (r. 1295-96). Omar wrote a number of scientific treatises, including one on the construction of astrolabes, of which a photographed copy exists and is preserved in Cairo, which contains testimonies from his teachers about his competence as a maker of such devices and an accurate description of this piece.
