Notes This jade piece was once owned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1037-1068 AH/1628-1658 AD). Verses from the Holy Qur’an were engraved on the front and back, with an ornate design, and two dates: 1041 AH (corresponding to 1631 to 1632 AD); And the fourth royal year (corresponding to 1631 to 1632 AD). This piece may have been an amulet, given the choice of Quranic verses and the date, which followed the death of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, suggesting that it was made to help the emperor endure the pain at this sad time.
