Notes This magnificent Qur'an was made for Sokollu Mehmedpaşa, who served as Grand Vizier of two Ottoman Sultans, Suleiman I (the Great, who ruled 1520-66) and his successor Selim II (r. 1566-74). It was copied in the exquisite rayhan script by the well-known calligrapher Hasan Çelebi, who was a slave, and later adopted by the also well-known calligrapher Ahmet Karahisari. The manuscript is beautifully gilded, bound in press-cut leather, and decorated with scrolls of clouds and flowering plants.
