Notes This hammered brass lamp is decorated with an openwork pattern inlaid with silver and black composite. It was made for the mausoleum of the Mamluk Sultan Malik al-Zahir Baibars (620-675 AH/1223-1277 AD), which was built in Damascus in 675 AH/1277 AD. The inscription carries words praying to God to sanctify the Sultan's soul and illuminate his grave. This lamp was accompanied by a tray, and when filled with oil and hung, the inscriptions on the shrine were highlighted.
