Notes
The decorations of this circular dish are arranged in concentric bands centered around a multi-petaled flower. The first band is decorated with simplified leaves, followed by another wider band alternately engraved with floral decorations representing cypress trees and arabesque inlays. A signature in cursive letters bears the name of the owner, “Hajj Ibrahim (Zaytouna),” and the date of execution of the piece, in Indian numerals, 1156 AH (1743 AD). The last letter of the word "Sahib", which surrounds the entire inscription, ends with a tulip, and in its shape imitates this tughra (signature of the Ottoman sultans). The third strip represents interlaced branches containing rosettes, and the last strip is decorated with sweeping arches furnished with flowers. In the past, this tray was placed on a small table of painted wood to serve various daily meals. It is still used in Algeria to this day.
