Notes
These pages are part of a 201-page collection of one of the oldest extant Qur’an manuscripts that is generally considered to have been produced at the beginning of the eighth century and therefore no more than a century after the death of the Prophet Muhammad in the eleventh year of the Islamic era (632 AD). The text of the Qur’an is always in Arabic, and these pages are written in Kufic script on parchment. The colorful bands of geometric decoration are in a range of colors consisting mainly of red, blue, green and yellow pigments, which mark the beginning of the new surah of the Qur’an.
