Notes This pencil case is fully decorated with birds and small animals in circles intertwined with dense mesh decoration. The inscription on the cover of the box indicates that it was made for the vizier of the Ilkhanid ruler, Shams al-Din al-Juwayni, an important minister, scholar, and poet who used his vast wealth to support scholars, philosophers, and theologians. This box is a fine example of a luxury piece created for a well-known personality.
