Notes The first two of the three brightly gilded openings bear a guide to the titles/index of the surahs and a dhikr. The main text begins in the third opening and is written in a beautiful and clear calligraphic script that is comparable to that of Visal, the nickname of one of the distinguished calligraphers and poets of the nineteenth century in Iran. The marginal notes are signed by Faizal's second son, Mirza Muhammad, who signs as Hakim and has a great reputation as a writer in Nasta'liq script. The lacquer covers are the work of Lutf Ali Shirazi, who had close ties to the Faizal family. The outer coverings are formations of what are known as flower and bird (gul and bulbul) and depict two birds in a rose tree on a sparkling dark brown ground. The lining of the book's decoration has a wonderful arrangement of iris and other flowers on a ground that mimics the color of turquoise mother-of-pearl. The borders contain quotations from Surat Al-Baqarah (No. 2), verses 255-7 on the front and verse 201 with religious phrases on the back.
