Notes
The two-hole ceramic object is reminiscent of what is known as the kendi (a Chinese pouring vessel with a long neck and a spoon), which was exported from the beginning of the Ming era (1368-1644) and which was imitated for a short period by Persian potters. Perhaps in the nineteenth century, Al-Kindi was supplied with a silver base and turned into a hookah (in Persian: qalyan), thus making its full examination impossible. But the visual areas provide relevant information that allows accurate model identification and objective comparison with similar examples. The decoration under the glass is of Chinese style, painted in two shades of blue and framed in black, and is placed in five rooms, four of which contain animals and birds against a background of lush plants. The Chinese-style mark on the base is reminiscent of the other markings on the Persian al-Kindi.
