Notes In Cairo in the fourteenth century, Al-Darir wrote the biography of the Prophet. Similar texts had been written previously, but Al-Darir was the first to write in Turkish, the language of the Mamluk ruling family in Egypt. About two hundred years later in Istanbul, Sultan Murad III (r. 1574-95) ordered the copying of a six-volume copy of the Book of the Blind. These illustrations are from the fourth volume of the manuscript, which relates to the battles of Badr (624 AD) and Uhud (625 AD). The illustrations are the work of several people and are generally executed in a simple, straightforward style.
