Notes This very modern bowl is made of simple pottery and is masked and beautified by the application of white pottery glaze, a semi-fluid colored clay. Its inner surface is decorated with a black engraving surrounding it, and the spaces between the letters are filled with abstract decoration, which is enhanced by a red color, and it is all covered with transparent glass. The inscription is read by rotating the piece counterclockwise, and the inscription represents an Arab proverb that is still popular today: “Greed is a sign of poverty.” This proverb inscribed on a number of Samanid bowls is a saying to Ali, “Where is Abu Talib, the Imam of the Shiites?”
