Notes This illustrated manuscript was copied by the well-known calligrapher Mir Ali al-Katib al-Sultani (ca. 1476-1556). He was one of many artists working in the city of Herat (today Afghanistan) when he was captured in 1529. Mir Ali and his colleagues were taken to Bukhara where they produced illustrated manuscripts of the Uzbek rulers. Written histories say that Mir Ali was unhappy in his new environment, yet the standard of his work never declined. The manuscript was purchased at an auction in 1962.
