Notes The chest and back of the shirt are covered with Qur’anic verses and supplications and supplications to God written in a variety of calligraphy and arranged in panels and decorative elements in various shapes. There are two decorative elements on the front bearing images of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, each within a decorative frame surrounding delicate images of other holy sites in the surrounding areas. The display of holy places on talismanic shirts is rare. Among the well-known examples are a shirt with a picture of the Holy Mosque in Mecca, a hat with embroidered pictures of the Prophet’s Mosque in the Topkapi Palace Museum, and scenes of both on an Indian shirt in the Al-Khalili collections. But all of them are unreal images, unlike the views on this shirt that are realistically depicted.
