Notes Several external fortresses protected the city of Algiers during the Ottoman period, beyond the walls, among them the Fort of Tamentavost, which, unlike many other castles, has been preserved in good condition until our days. This fortress is located on the head of Tamentavost at the other end of the Gulf of Algiers, and was built on an octagonal plan consisting of twenty-two rooms, twenty-one of which were distributed in the form of triangular groups on seven sides of the octagon and around a courtyard. One of these rooms was prepared to be used as a prayer hall with a censer devoid of decoration. The twenty-second room is located on the eighth side, leading to the outside and acting as a winding entrance to the fort. Above these rooms is the roof, which was surrounded by barricades containing twenty-four cannon niches, some of which were designed to form double firing bays. We can see a supervisor above the door. The walls were built of large, reused stone, and reached approximately nine meters in height from the bottom of the trench to its top. This tower is the only fort, in addition to the fort called “The English Tower,” that was provided with a moat.
