Notes
An ivory box with hinges and a silver buckle, bearing an inscription in lush Kufic calligraphy: “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is what was done for the lady, daughter of Abdul Rahman, Commander of the Faithful, may God’s mercy and pleasure be upon him.” The sides of the box's body and the top of the lid are decorated with a relief pattern of softly and gracefully intertwined plants. The same type of floral decoration appears on the marble wall panels in the reception hall of Abd al-Rahman's palace in Medina al-Zahra, near Cordoba. The fine ivory pieces of this type are considered one of the most important manifestations of the art that arose during the Umayyad period in Spain.
