Notes In Islamic lands, armor and weapons were not only means of war or defense, but they were indicators of prestigious status, wealth and power. They were therefore made by skilled craftsmen working in partnership with court designers, goldsmiths and jewellers, who helped transform abstract military clothing into works of art. This shirt is made of rings known as zards, which are supported by solid sheets to cover sensitive areas of the body. It is decorated with rich silver inlay carvings on its inner surface, which include anonymous titles and blessings, some of which appear to be distorted.
